An example of what happens when you get your website remade for cheap (second image). We had to step in and intervene and even educate the client about aesthetic. The best point in that meeting was when we made a comparison, “Just like how you are antsy whenever you see ugly fingernails, we get antsy when we see bad graphic design.” After that, we came to a mutual understanding.

The Vietnamese American Young Leaders Association of New Orleans (VAYLA-NO) is a youth-led, youth organizing and development, community-based organization in New Orleans dedicated to the empowerment of Vietnamese American and underrepresented youth through services, cultural enrichment, and positive social change.

This year, 2011, was their fifth anniversary, and to commemorate the occasion, VAYLA-NO hosted a gala fundraiser to support its programming. V9 Pro Bono offered a service grant and completed multiple projects within the design package.

Dominic of Agoro Design was the artistic director, and V9 followed his lead and developed the supporting collateral pieces. We took the opportunity to repair the logo, staying true to the original concept, but giving it a more polished look. Dominic created the invitation card, and we followed suit to design the flyer (print and electronic), program booklet, banner, and website, adhering to a blue, silver, and orange theme.

We also did website traffic reporting, helped set up an online donation and ticket registration system, and a backdrop for photo opportunities, for a total of 9 projects in this package.

The Yes on Prop 72 campaign advocated that certain employers would be required to provide health coverage for their employees and in some cases dependents through either (1) paying a fee to a new state program primarily to purchase private health insurance coverage or (2) arranging directly with health insurance providers for health care coverage. The state would also establish a new program to assist lower-income employees to pay their share of health care premiums.

Unfortunately, the camp advocating for the proposition didn’t really have an in-house designer; the readability of their flyer was abysmal. And so we gave it a very standard layout repair and was commissioned to also do a poster aimed at Vietnamese/Asian American demographics.

EM Radio is a Vietnamese American youth-run radio program. Currently, however, it targets mostly the older crowd, but Quyen, the host of the daily evening show, has a refreshing perspective compared to its competitors. You might even say hip.

After EM Radio was acquired by nonprofit group, CayDa Foundation, the board wanted to take the EM Radio program to a new direction. We were given the opportunity to pair up the new direction with a new brand. The “e” reminded us of a satellite dish, and so we took advantage of that, and changed the logo colors to match its parent organization.

We also wanted to launch the unveiling of the radio program with a campaign, and noticed the word “EM” was the start of a lot of inspiring words, such as “empower” and “embrace”. It was a chance to create a new culture for EM. We’ll continue to develop the new brand as the radio program grows.

Real estate flyers often try to do too much at once. But when you’re a buyer, you already have enough trouble hunting for a home, the last thing you want is to hunt for the details on a flyer. For our client, Sunnyvale-based Pinnacle Bay Properties, we thought, if I were in the shoes of a homebuyer, what would I be looking for? The location, number of rooms, and price are the primary indexes of comparison. Therefore those three things have to be clearly displayed on the flyer. We hoped to establish a standard format for all properties to be compared this way. It would at least look better than this ad.

Design is about understanding who the reader will be. For those with difficult eyesight, it was crucial that we pointed out the main message right away. The design had to be clean not just for readability, but also to convey a sense of peace of mind, i.e. a healthy body. But if we were to go with mere minimalism, it could have come out rather boring looking, and uninviting. With the limited space and a need for a clean look, we tried to let the colored typography and simple patterns lend itself to a aesthetic pleasantness.
